The Clothing and Textiles Unit of the Home Economics section, under the VOTECH Department, recently organized a Fashion Innovation Showcase as part of the continuous assessment for Level 400 students. The event highlighted creative garment construction and product development skills acquired during the semester.
The assessment panel comprised Mrs. Alfredina Saana (Course Lecturer), together with Mr. Adams Abudi and Mr. Mohammed Bukari, who evaluated the students’ projects using established design and garment production criteria.
Course Title: Product Development in Home Economics
Course Objective: To equip teacher trainees with the technical and creative competencies required for design thinking, apparel development, and innovative product creation in Clothing and Textiles education.
Students were tasked to select four design elements (e.g., line, shape, color, texture) to conceptualize and construct an original garment. Working in 19 groups, each team translated their unique design concept into a finished apparel product.
The design creation process encompassed multiple stages reflective of industry-standard practices, including:
- Research & Trend Analysis
- Ideation and Concept Development
- Source of Design Inspiration
- Fashion Illustration & Technical Sketching
- Pattern Drafting and Adaptation
- Pattern Grading and Final Pattern Development
- Prototype Construction (Toile Development)
- Garment Assembly and Finishing for Final Presentation
This structured approach allowed students to integrate aesthetic creativity with functional garment production skills, culminating in innovative apparel products that demonstrated their proficiency in fashion design, pattern engineering, and textile application.
