Murals of Meaning: Final-Year Visual Arts Students Transform the BACE Multi-Purpose Auditorium

Art, culture and scholarship have found a permanent home on the walls of the Bagabaga College of Education Multi-Purpose Auditorium as eighteen final-year Visual Arts students transformed its entrance corridor into a vibrant celebration of identity, creativity and national development.

As part of their Project Work in Visual Arts for the 2025/2026 academic year, the students conceptualized and executed four monumental mural paintings, each measuring 12 feet by 21 feet in landscape orientation. Rendered in oil paint and characterized by bold geometric abstraction, the murals breathe life into the walls of the auditorium, turning an ordinary passageway into a visual journey through education, culture and social responsibility.

The four murals explore themes that resonate deeply with the vision and aspirations of Bagabaga College of Education. Through compelling colours, forms and symbolism, the students captured the joy and fulfilment of graduation ceremonies, the rich heritage of Northern Ghana through the energetic movements of Bamaya dancers and drummers, the urgent call for environmental sustainability, and the enduring pursuit of academic excellence.

The mural on graduation celebrates the triumph of perseverance and the transformative power of education, depicting students crossing the threshold from learning to leadership. The representation of Bamaya dancers and drummers pays homage to the cultural traditions of Northern Ghana, preserving and celebrating a heritage that continues to shape generations. The environmental sustainability mural highlights humanity’s responsibility towards nature, emphasizing conservation, recycling and the collective effort required to protect the planet. Finally, the academic excellence mural symbolizes knowledge, discipline and innovation, the very ideals upon which the college stands.

The students who brought these remarkable concepts to life are:

The project was successfully executed under the guidance of the course lecturer, Mr. Macharious Nabang and Dr Kenneth Dam Sakoalia, whose mentorship challenged the students to translate abstract ideas into meaningful public art. Special appreciation is extended to the management of Bagabaga College of Education for their unwavering support, particularly for providing some of the materials and paints that made the realization of this ambitious project possible.

The eighteen students who undertook this remarkable artistic journey deserve commendation for their resilience, teamwork and commitment to excellence. Through countless hours of planning, sketching and painting, they have created not merely murals, but visual stories that will continue to inspire present and future generations of students.

As members of the college community walk through the entrance corridor of the Multi-Purpose Auditorium, they are greeted not just by walls adorned with colour, but by enduring symbols of culture, scholarship, environmental consciousness and the limitless possibilities of artistic expression.
